^^ After a 1941 study of bombing accuracy via area photos, it is discovered that
^^ only one in five bombers even dropped their bombs within 5 miles of their target.

^^ The P-51 Mustang was originally designed in 1940 and was to revolutionise 
^^ fighter design because of its low drag laminar flow wings. However, it had 
^^ such a poor performance that it was never used in a air-combat role. It was 
^^ only after the American design was retrofitted with Rolls Royce Merlin engines 
^^ that the famous D version begin to make an impact in 1944. With a maximum 
^^ range of over 2000 miles, (verses 500 miles for a Spitfire), it was able to

^^ The V-1 was a crude but cost effective low altitude cruise missile launched 
^^ from a ramp. It had a 580kg warhead, a 5m wingspan and over 5000 were fired 
^^ at London and Antwerp. The US evetually built copies of the V-1, designated
^^ the JB-1. The Fritz-X a radio guided glide bomb carrying a 1400kg armour 
^^ piercing warhead carried by Heinkel 177 bombers. The Fritz-X and its 
^^ successor the Henschel293 sank or damaged many Allied and Italian warships.
